WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO RETIRE?
The Nordic Club in Portugal is interested in surveying the market for prospective couples and singles who are looking to retire in a modern, functional settlement for active, independent, senior adult living. Our idea is to build a housing project of approximately 150 apartments ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms. This would be located within the councils of Oeiras or Cascais, just outside of Lisbon. The intention is that it will be organised as a cooperative to keep investment and running costs as low as possible, while maintaining good quality standards. The Scandinavian experience in senior living housing will incorporate the use of energy efficient materials and equipment. After all Portugal has amongst the highest rates of sun hours/year, which makes the use of modern solar energy a feasible alternative.
Today, seniors have a lot of leisure time! Hence, we plan to organise a lot of activities in addition to the traditional fitness training, swimming, golfing, reading etc. With this in mind we plan to build a nursery/kindergarten with professional management, where seniors would be able to assist a few hours per week. We will also have a large garden where a senior garden group can plan and maintain an excellent outdoor environment for the enjoyment of all members. In addition there will be a separate spice garden to supply members with fresh, aromatic spices for their culinary needs. We will also introduce a small greenhouse to experiment with wild strawberries and other goodies. Perhaps you have a suggestion for an interesting occupation for seniors? Please tell us!
To make this possible we calculate with an average investment of € 120 – 160.000 per apartment, with subsequent monthly costs of € 150 – 400. Primarily we are directing this to Nordic people living in Portugal; however we also welcome seniors from the Nordic countries. With this in mind there will be a secretariat in the complex employed to deal with documentation, authorizations and other bureaucracy which at times make life complicated for foreigners living in Portugal.
